Help Dr. Kailes & Team support a cause close to our hearts. We will be supporting our office manager’s son, Jack, in his fight against life-threatening food allergies by participating in the FARE Walk on November 16, 2013.
As many as 15 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.9 million children-that’s 1 in 25 adults and 1 in 13 children under age 18. Food allergy occurs when a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks a food protein. Symptoms range from mild (rashes, hives, itching) to life-threatening (trouble breathing, loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death. Even trace amounts of a food allergen can cause a potentially deadly reaction. The key to survival is early recognition of symptoms and appropriate treatment: The single factor most associated with death is a delay or failure to treat with epinephrine. Food allergens are life-altering for the entire family and require constant vigilance. The most common allergens are foods we encounter every day: milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish. There is no cure for food allergies.
